Chenin Blanc is one of the world's most versatile grapes and, paradoxically, one of the most underrated. Originating in Anjou in the Loire, it produces everything from tense dry wines (Savennières) to long-lived botrytized desserts (Coteaux du Layon, Quarts de Chaume) and excellent sparkling wines (Vouvray Mousseux). Its naturally high acidity gives it exceptional aging potential — great Chenins can age 30+ years. In South Africa it's called Steen and is the country's most planted white grape. The South African style is more tropical (guava, banana) than the French. Its best examples come from Swartland, where old unirrigated vineyards produce wines of real character. In Argentina, Chenin has a particular history: it was one of the most planted white grapes for decades, especially in San Rafael, where it was used as the base for budget sparkling wines. Today there's a recovery movement with elegant varietals in Tupungato, showing all the potential the grape has when handled with care.
