Tannat is famous for being one of the most tannic grapes on the planet — its name says it all. Originating in Madiran, in southwestern France, it produces wines of deep color, robust body, and an astringency that in its youth can be fierce and that over time softens into notes of leather, tobacco, and dark chocolate. Its second home is Uruguay, where it became the country's emblematic grape (it arrived there as 'Harriague'). In Argentina it has a presence in San Juan, Salta, and Mendoza, generally in styles that seek to tame its power through oak aging or blending with softer grapes. It is also celebrated for its exceptionally high polyphenol content, associated with cardiovascular benefits.
